#SOPA/PIPA vs #NDAA Part Two: Chasing the Phantom Menace (I'm NOT talking Star Wars)

Yesterday, I posted part one of my 3-part SOPA/PIPA Vs NDAA series (read it) in which I suggest that all these sites going dark to protest SOPA/PIPA was just misplaced efforts and energy (the indefinite-detention-legalizing NDAA of 2012 is much more worthy of protest, harms more of our core human rights, and is already a law!). Last night over at Mandommag.com, my third post for them went into more detail explaining just how the NDAA is much more of a threat than the SOPA/PIPA bills (read it). But in my post, here on thepete.com yesterday, I also suggested that the reason this movement had gotten so big was not because of how much a threat SOPA or PIPA are (they haven't even passed either house of Congress yet) but because big Internet companies stand to lose a lot of money if they get blocked in the US (aka they're only doing it for the money). Today I'm going to suggest that protesting SOPA/PIPA actually helps the bad guys.

When the War Against Terror (or as I like to call it, "tWAT") began, the USG made sure we were adequately scared shitless by a few thousand underfunded guys in the desert who wanted to kill us. Politicians insisted there would be another attack. They had us so horny to kill terrorists that we were distracted from the fact that both wars, and several laws that were passed, were illegal, unconstitutional or both. We were distracted from the things that matter most to this country--our principles. What were we distracted by? A myth--a terrorist "organization" that had minimal funding and a handful of actual participants. Compared to the Soviet Union, our last major antagonist, these guys were nothing--literal phantoms.

But now we're used to the idea of terrorists and aren't so scared of them anymore. In fact, we're not scared of anything these days. Largely due to the #Occupy movement (which neither party could co-opt like the Republicans did with the Tea Partiers), we are seeing a large, vocal group of Americans speaking out against unjust machinations by the USG and Corporate America. When you think about it, the relationship between Corporate America and the USG is the single most important relationship there is in America today. Without it, just think of how many politicians couldn't stay in office and how many pro-business laws wouldn't get passed, thus hampering businesses' abilities to do whatever they want for a profit.

Coincidentally (or not) here comes SOPA/PIPA threatening to take away huge chunks of our ability to communicate. In a worst-case scenario, it could mean our current Internet utopia would be destroyed. Naturally, we all panic since revolutions around the world were powered, in part, by the Internet. Plus if I can't tweet from the toilet, my day would suck that much more.

Forget that the bill has yet to pass either house. Forget that the president has said he's not too keen on it. Forget that while so many of us are chasing around this literal phantom menace hundreds, possibly thousands, of human beings are being held indefinitely by US authorities around the world RIGHT NOW--and it's entirely legal.

This sends a message to all Americans that you better not show up for that #Occupy rally in town because you could get arrested and held--possibly forever. Since much of the #Occupiers are being looked at by authorities as challenging the establishment, it would only take a nudge, in their minds, to call you a terrorist. Anything you do that could be perceived as a challenge to "America" could also be perceived as making the job easier for terrorists. Thus making you a bad guy, too.

But thank God Google, Tumblr, Wikipedia and other sites made sure the Internet was left untouched because you'll be able to tweet your lawyer from Guantanamo. Oh wait, no you won't, because in Guantanamo there's no wifi, or any other kind of freedom.

So keep on chasing that phantom menace and you just might find yourself dealing with something much worse than the movie by the same name.

#SOPA/PIPA vs #NDAA Part One: What is this protest really about?

I've got a post that should go up at some point soon over at Mandommag.com about this same topic, but I thought I should go into a bit more detail.

So why all this hubbub about SOPA and PIPA when the bills have yet to pass either house of Congress? Where was all this hubbub when the NDAA of 2012 was passed? This is my main gripe about all these sites going dark today. Which is a bigger threat? Stopping us from using the Internet the way we want or a violation of one of the most basic human rights our constitution guarantees?

Of course, SOPA/PIPA need to be protested, but there has been MUCH more of a net-wide freakout over these two unpassed laws than is required at this point in time. Wouldn't humanity be better served by spending our energy and effort on protesting the more infringing law that is already on the books rather than laws that are three very large steps away from being laws?

Maybe we should ask ourselves why there is such a bigger outcry against SOPA/PIPA. Is it just because these laws could give corporations the ability to effectively shut down some our favorite websites? In the great scheme of things, that seems pretty minor. What's your Internet freedom compared to your actual freedom?

So what is it, then? My only guess is that it's all for the money. Think about all the money those sites will lose if they are blocked from American users. Since they would be blocked Google would probably have trouble indexing them and if they had trouble indexing them, they'd have trouble putting targeted ads on their sites. In theory those sites could go under entirely, robbing Google and other b2b service providers of a lot of income. Of course, when you or I get detained indefinitely at a protest, that doesn't have any effect on these companies' bottom lines, so why should they care?

From Tumblr today. Really? The WHOLE Internet needs to be saved?

Maybe it's a stretch, but why else would such Internet powerhouses as Google, and Wikipedia care about a law being passed? They didn't seem to give a shit when a law was passed that would allow for the legal indefinite imprisonment of people. So, when human freedom is at risk, they're meh. But what gets these big guys motivated? Lost revenue. Then you see them marshaling their Internet forces and suddenly it's as though the entire Internet was at risk--literally, that's what Tumblr is saying today.

"SAVE THE INTERNET" any page on Tumblr reads right now.

It's as though the Internet always existed or as though we couldn't live without it.

Do I think SOPA/PIPA are worth protesting? Of course. Do I think it's a waste of resources because there's a bigger threat out there? Definitely.

I've plenty more to say about this.

Here are the spines of two proofs of my first finished novel. Spines on self-pubbed paperbacks (for some reason) always look crappy to me, but the one on top looks exceptionally so. What's odd is that of all the things I changed in the cover graphic between proofs, the spine was not one of them. Yet, for some reason, the later proof (the one on top) came out looking much worse than the previous proof (the one on the bottom).

I don't remember having this trouble with Lulu. Here's hoping CreateSpace.com makes it right for me or is willing to refund the $40 I spent on getting this book listen on Amazon. (Not a fortune, but hey, $40 is $40.)

In this batch we have a still closed subway station, a tiny but almost tropical waterfall (squint and you can see it in the pic with the yellow and black sign in the foreground), fallen leaves, branches and trees and some seriously blocked paths through the park near my apartment. Not in these pics: the fact that people were out and about, enjoying the nicer weather and generally seeming happy and comfortable. Maybe we need more of these storms to remind us of what is important?

I've checked the news and from my own perspective, NYC didn't get hit very hard at all. I mean, compared to the madness that the news was predicting. I got some text messages from my wife this morning in Connecticut and they lost power around 4:30am and don't have it back yet. So, we NYCers seemed to have done all right. Our infrastructure might have been tougher, too, though.

Now I've got to get some breakfast, shower and shoot some footage of how things look today.

So, hurricane Irene is apparently going to hit NYC late afternoon/early evening on Sunday, August 28. Not sure if you're near a flood area? Check the map. I found I was close to a Zone C which is only a threat to neighbors a few blocks away from me (and not to me) and that's ONLY if a category 3 or 4 hurricane were to hit and that's very rare. New Jersey Transit Sculptures

When you take the train out to Jersey and then take Newark's light-rail anyhere from Newark's Penn Station (yes, Newark has a Penn just like Manhattan) you see these scultpures on the walk to the light-rail. I thought the lady was yelling at the guy behind her. Turns out it was her little girl behind a sign.

It's my first completed attempt to tie a bow tie after much obcenities uttered and failure. It's a little sloppy but I'm sure with practice I'll get better. Check out for the most helpful video I found.

I've had stuff trashed before by the USPS before and they usually stick something like this in a little plastic bag with a note apologizing. It seems pretty shitty for the United States Postal Service to not apologize when this is so obviously a birthday card. I'm going to suggest they start sending e-cards from now on.

George Washington Bridge and the Ft. Washington Memorial on Memorial Day 2011

In the first pic you can see the flag hanging on the Jersey-side of the GWB but, by the time I took the second pic, the flag was twisting in the wind (oh, the metaphors!). The final pic is of the Ft. Washington Memorial that commemorates those that died protecting Ft. Washington back, during the Revolutionary War (I try to visit it every year on Memorial Day).

Pretty soon you won't have to follow the Big Gay Ice Cream truck's tweets for their rolling whereabouts (though you should, since their tweets are usually pretty entertaining). In mid-June, Bryan Petroff and Doug Quint plan on opening a brick-and-mortar shop on the East 7th Street block between First Avenue and Avenue A, what's already been nicknamed one of the tastiest blocks in the city.

This isn't goodbye to the truck at all, don't worry. Doug loves working the truck, and plans to be on there as much as possible once the shop is up and running. But with the bigger space (formerly Xoom juice bar), they'll be able to prepare more toppings and sauces from scratch like ginger curry and dulce de leche, as well others they've been testing for the cookbook. As for the soft-serve, they'll start out by sticking to vanilla and chocolate, but plan on expanding to a rotating selection of their own homemade flavors. You'll also see all the other usual suspects from the truck like, the Bea Arthur and the return of the much missed Choinkwich.

That's RIGHT--the Choinkwich will be returning!! If you don't remember, I once stood up against a terrorist to get one of these tasty delights made of two chocolate cookies, chocolate ice cream and caramelized bacon (Watch me enjoy my first Choinkwich). MMmmm... I'm salivating just thinking about them!

I've already been telling friends and family who visit NYC that no trip to the Big Apple is complete without checking out the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, but soon you won't even need to worry about the weather, or the tweets--just head over to East 7Th Street!

My only gripe is that they won't be open in time for my birthday on the 6th. Ah well, guess I'll just have to go off my diet again, later in the month :)
