140 Characters Conference: Where to Begin about #140conf?

OK, this is not going to be the mega-recap blog post loaded with great pictures and video of the event. However, I did want to put something up that encapsulated my thoughts on my experience at 140 Characters Conference or, as we've all come to know it, #140conf :)

First off, THANK YOU JEFF PULVER (@jeffpulver ) for inviting Jay ThePal! It was a truly great experience for both myself and for my wife Sierra (@Siskita ) and for Jay ThePal and Kay ThePal, too ;) Not only did we get to network and meet a lot of great people, we also learned quite a bit from the talks given by some really intelligent and interesting people. I've been to other conferences/conventions and usually the panels and talks are kind of on the "meh" side of things, but I think I managed to pick up something from every talk/panel we watched. My only gripe is that they seemed too short. But short makes sense at a conference based on microblogging and how it is changing our world. Besides, all the folks who spoke were so friendly and approachable, we had no trouble just walking up and talking to them after they were done speaking.

Second, I'd like to throw a HUGE THANKS to Sol Lipman aka Sol on 12seconds.tv and @thesolster on Twitter. Without his support and enthusiasm, we never would have gotten into #140conf. (Hell, Jay wouldn't be as popular either!)

I reeeally wish I had more time to cover this. Basically, Iran had a

huge election and the main challenger, a dude called Mousavi lost.

Protests have erupted as claims of election fraud have, as well.

ABCNews has said that their footage of the scene of protests in Tehran

has been confiscated and that the pictures/video coming out of the

capital city of Iran were shot with cell phones (ironically, I watched

this report on my iPhone).  Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that Mousavi

has been arrested and, according to @SashaKane in a Twitter post

he may have also been charged with: "http://twitter.com/SashaKane/status/2156528820, followed by

oppression of the media, protests and rumors of his competitor's

arrest don't exactly make Iran a less irresistible target for invasion

by the USG.



In fact, as we all know, weaker justifications for invasion have been

used in the past.  Iran becoming unstable might almost be seen as a

good reason to invade.



Either way, stuff to be concerned with for sure...

Weird day and night. Felt better once I accepted today as a productivity failwhale.

So, I didn't get a chance to post yesterday's pages or write new ones, but I wrote so many yesterday, I lived off of credit for a day, so shoot me. I'll post all seven tomorrow--I SWEAR. :) There was something wrong with me today where every time I tried to do something productive I got pissy and moany. Finally, when I realized the day was irrevocably shot, my mood changed, I brightened up and everything was right again. Seems I just needed a day off.

Went to a show tonight. It was called The Trouble with Doug and it was a musical take on Kafka's Metamorphosis. It was a lot of fun. I'll write more about it tomorrow.

Then, after that, on the way home, I saw someone I went to college with. Couldn't remember her name, only worked with her on one project together for maybe a quarter of a semester, it's been almost 2 decades, I'm a blond and have a beard now, so the odds of her remembering me would be pretty slim. So, I said nothing (to the disappointment of @siskita) but, to me, the magic of New York City is made up of moments like that--where, out of thousands of people you see, you randomly bump into someone you haven't seen in almost twenty years and when you did see them last it was in an entirely different city.

The cool thing was that she got off the train one stop south of me so it's entirely possible I'll see her again. If I do, I've told @siskita that I will talk to her. Now if I can just remember the woman's name...

Wise Day 1, Chapter 1 by ThePete (my new novella)

OK, remember my Battlestar Galactica series finale scripts? Well, I'm trying out some prose this time 'round! Here are the first 2 pages of a novella I'll be writing daily (starting yesterday). I aim to update every night at midnight.

What's it about?

It's called Wise: Day 1 and it's about a guy from the future who is trying to catch up with an alien who has trapped his body in a... well, it's better if you just read it--not that this first chapter explains it. But have a read and feel free to let me know what you think. Just don't be upset if I don't agree with you or don't reply immediately or at all. I'm really swamped and barely have time to write, let alone thank/interact with everyone for/about their thoughts. Just know that I do appreciate any constructive criticism. Comments about typos and grammar mistakes are useless to me as I am not editing this or even proofing this as I go. It's first draft all the way through. If typos bug you, DON'T READ IT.

Why Steve Jobs is an Asshole (and Most Corporate Overlords)

I'm writing this because I love my iPhone. But I love it the way I love a woman who's no good for me or a food that is really unhealthy for me. See, the hardware of the iPhone is pretty damn amazing. It's capable of all sorts of stuff, but out of the box (and even after hacking) it's still falls far short of what it's capable of doing. Why is this? It's because of Steve Jobs wanting to fit in with the rest of the corporate overlords that like to tell us what to do with the stuff we buy from them.

Have you ever bought a DVD player in your home country but try to play a DVD from another country on it? Lots of times you can't. Why? Because the DVD companies and the DVD player companies are working together to control how we consume what they sell us. This kind of thing happens all the time with cell phones and the iPhone is a perfect example.

Wanna shoot video? NOPE, you can't. Why? Because a few hundred thousand iPhone users uploading videos will clog AT&T's very own series of tubez. Rather than just upgrade their services, Steve Jobs dumbs-down what the iPhone can do via the software that runs on it.

Think of it like buying a chicken from the supermarket and having the farmer that raised it and the supermarket owner telling you how to cook it.

But let me get specific.

Things the iPhone can't do but really should:

1) video recording/shooting/streaming. Yeah, that's right, I should be able to use it like a portable VCR, camcorder and Internet-broadcasting device. The hardware is perfectly capable of this but even after hacking it, I can only do two of these three things.

2) Enough with the fricken iTunes crap. I want to drag and drop, dammit. I can do it with my Jailbroken phone, but it's just not the same. Stop treating us like thieves and pandering to the media companies. Screw those guys, they only know how to make crap these days anyway.

3) Let me use my damn phone on the carrier I want. Stop telling me what businesses I can and can't give my money to. And cell phone carriers? Give me unlimited data already! This is idiotic, I've spent $20-$40 a month for unlimited broadband service to my home for EIGHT YEARS. Why can I not have unlimited data AT EDGE SPEEDS AT LEAST, DAMMIT??

4) Let apps run in the background, dickhead. WTF. My old Sidekick 3 can do this.

5) I don't care if you add cut & paste because I've hacked my phone and can do this two different ways. (Though you should do it so folks don't HAVE to hack their iPhones for this BASIC BLOODY FEATURE.)

6) Custom wallpaper/skins (see #5)

7) A browser that actually caches. Almost every time I pull up Safari, it tries to go online for the latest version of the web page you previously had up. Lame. Don't want it.

Now, mind you, I've written this before the big announcement(s) at WWDC on June 7, 2009, so I don't know what Jobs is going to pull, but I can bet it won't solve all of these problems or avoid creating new ones.

I could go on, but it's damn late and I want to post this a LITTLE before the WWDC announcement.

So, I'd just like to conclude by saying that I think it's pretty much anti-American to let us buy something and then try to control what we can do with it. So, just let go with the control issues. This is supposed to be a free country.

Wow, this was a pretty great week for Jay ThePal! Lots to talk about with gay marriage (and what it means for puppet marriage) and Kay ThePal helped out more this week--unfortunately, she got a little too close to the booze for one of the 12secondst.tv challenges. :( Also, added for fun is the best blooper a puppet could ever experience! Well, "best" from our point of view, anyway. :)

Jay ThePal's Jay TheVlog for May 23, 2009 HD tests! Green Screen! Ripping off Star Wars and more!

This week was fun because we tried out the HD cam for all of Jay ThePal's stuff for 12seconds.tv. It ended up being a bit too much work on the back end, but the two days we used the cam were a lot of fun. Between the obviously better picture to the gun we had with green screen, it was almost like we had a budget! Yeah! So, check it out and like Jay always says, let us know what you think. YEAH!!

This is semi-old news, but with Cheney making the rounds again

recently I felt this story would be good to conjure up--it's from 2004

but important to think about when Dick Cheney goes on and on about

"protecting America."



In an October 12, 2004 article on CommonDreams.org, Jason Leopold

wrote about how Dick Cheney was

helping Iraq break international law:The report on

Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction, prepared by Charles

Duelfer, a former U.N. weapons inspector and head of the Iraqi Survey

Group, said Saddam Hussein used revenue from the oil-for-food program

and "created a web of front companies and used shadowy deals with

foreign governments, corporations, and officials to amass $11 billion

in illicit revenue in the decade before the US-led invasion last

year," reports The New York Times.



Sure, $11 billion is chump change compared to what we've actually

spent on the invasion and occupation of Iraq, but that was, to

use the old cliche, a lot of money back then. Leopold goes on,

however, later in the article, to say:But the one

company that helped Saddam exploit the oil-for-food program in the

mid-1990s that wasn't identified in Duelfer's report was Halliburton,

and the person at the helm of Halliburton at the time of the scheme

was Vice President Dick Cheney. Halliburton and its subsidiaries were

one of several American and foreign oil supply companies that helped

Iraq increase its crude exports from $4 billion in 1997 to nearly $18

billion in 2000 by skirting U.S. laws and selling Iraq spare parts so

it could repair its oil fields and pump more oil.



Leopold cites UN documents in the article as his source for this

story. While he doesn't link to the docs themselves in his article, in

the face of evidence like this, if true, it's hard to give any

credibility to Cheney at all and I find it very frustrating that the

media gives a man like this, who is no longer in power, a voice on TV

and on the radio. Frankly, it makes me question the entirety of

mainstream media.



As if there wasn't already enough reasons to mistrust the mainstream media.
