@JayThePal & @KayThePal Guest Star on the Hucklebug Podcastathon 2009 & HELP FIGHT CANCER!! YEAHHH!!

This was way cool because we got to support one of our favorite podcasts--The HUCKLEBUG--AND fight cancer!! YEAH!

You can listen to the Hucklebug at http://hucklebug.com any time, but like this weekend was a special deal though since Bet & Stennie, the hosts of the Hucklebug podcast, were doing a podcastathon as like part of Blogathon 2009 to help raise money in the fight against cancer. This meant that like they were podcasting for twenty-four hours straight, man! They started at 9am eastern time on July 25 and didn't stop until 9am July 26, man!! So, to help out, Kay and I went on and helped them fill an episode. This is like behind the scenes footage of us on the show. The Highbridge Water Tower is 100+ years-old and 185 feet tall. The tower was built to house the pump that provided water to the north end of Manhattan in the last half of the 1800s. It may not sound exciting, but the inside of the tower looks like a movie set and the view from the top is pretty impressive. Just watch the thing--what? Ya got something better to do in the next ten minutes?? ;)

California is a Giant Canary in Earth's Economic Mine Shaft

The picture attached to this post was taken by fellow-blogger (shindotv.com ) and socnetizen, @ShindoTV. It depicts a screen on an ATM that is warning that Wells Fargo, one of the bigger banks California, won't be accepting IOUs issued by that state's government.

See California is going through massive, MASSIVE economic troubles. The thing that's bugging me is that aside from Shindo's post about California's IOUs being rejected, I haven't come across any other blog posts or news articles covering the fall of the fifth-largest economy in the world.

That IS what's happening and no one really seems to care.

Here's part of the comment I left on ShindoTV.com:

...I think the current economic situation in my former home state should be sending shockwaves through the rest of the country and even the rest of the planet. California is the 5th biggest economy in the world. When the government of the 5th biggest economy of the world can't afford to pay its employees, this says something bad, not only about the state of California's economy but of everyone else's economies, too.

Sure, California's economy is really just a subset of the US economy as a whole, but it's a HUGE subset and when it drops, so does the US economy (even if no one is paying note of it).

So, what's my point? That we've still got a long way to go before we are out of this economic mess and the sooner we realize this, the better, since further denial will just prolong it.

California's economic mess predates the greater US economy's mess. They were struggling since before the "Governator" even took over and they are still struggling. As long as the government that runs the fifth largest economy in the world struggles, so will the rest of the world.

Just my ¥2. I could be wrong, but I haven't been, so far, and I've been talking about our economy crashing and bleeding out for years now.

Believe me--I really want to be wrong. (Been saying that for years, too!)

This is the oldest bridge in NYC--finished in 1848!

It's part of the aqueduct that used to deliver all of Manhattan's water. There's a big (no-longer-used) pipe underneath the walkway there. Speaking of which the bridge used to be a popular pedestrian method for crossing from Manhattan into the Bronx and back. Highbridge Tower with Sun

This is a tower built to house a pump and pipes used to pressurize the water from the Croton aqueduct enough to make it up to the north end of Manhattan. Without this my neighborhood might not have come to be. The rest of Manhattan got their water thanks to gravity pulling H2O through the aqueduct system (just like the Romans).

Hitchcock should have shot a movie here. This is from the bottom of the 185-foot tower looking upward.

Highbridge Tower (top)

This is the inside of the water tower--this is where a huge water tank used to be. Water would be pumped up in one pipe to the top and then gravity would pull the water back down another pipe, providing Nor(thern)Ma(nhattan) residents with water. Pretty cool for 1800s technology, huh?

This spiral staircase allows you to go up into the attic of the tower. There's nothing to see up there, but I did go up anyway. I shot some video, so watch my twitterstream or my YouTube for that, in the next day or two.

I just thought the walls were interesting here. Notice the different bricks and colors. Not surprising for a tower built 100+ years ago.

TimesOnline.co.uk says Israel Preparing for Potential Attack Iran, originally uploaded by thepetecom.

TimesOnline.co.uk is reporting that Israeli

warships are positioning themselves in the Suez Canal in preparation

for a possible invasion of Iran.

Speaking strictly as the fiction writer and the observer of world

events that I am, I must say the timing of this does make some amount

of tactical (if I'm using the word correctly) sense from the Israeli

standpoint. Iran is a mess after its government cracked down, rather

oppressively, on protestors (mostly students, apparently). There's

been talk for the past month of a complete revolution in Iran--the

leaders can't seem to decide if their recent election counts or even

if the ballots were properly counted and it's not the easiest thing to

get an accurate account of the state of things inside Iranian borders

due to a crackdown on foreign press.

So, with that kind of chaos--a stumbling government and a rather large

contingent of their citizens feeling pretty rebellious, Israel may

have picked a perfect time for invasion--one that just might catch the

Iranian military at a place where they simply will not have their shit

together enough to defend against an attack.

The theory before the recent Iranian crackdown was that even though

the populace didn't seem to generally care for the leadership, said

leaders could still rally the Iranian people to rise up and defend the

country from any outside attackers. After showing such bloodthirsty

instincts on it's own people, Iran's leaders just might find it harder

to get support from those people--at least, that's what I bet Israel

is thinking.

Does this mean an Israeli attack on Iran is moral or even legal? No

and no--not from my perspective, anyway. Iran would have to attack

Israel in order to make an attack on Iran legal in the eyes of the UN

Charter (aka international law). On a moral level (think the Golden

Rule) Israel can't invade a country that may be talking shit, but

isn't doing shit to mess with them--so how could Israel feel the need

to attack? But then, Israel is the country that's been occupying a

people for decades for no easily discernible reason, so anything is

possible.

No, I don't hate Jews, nor do I hate Israel. I just don't like what

their government is doing. Drawing first blood is never a good

thing--end of story. PR, rhetoric, even blatant threats do NOT

justify an attack on another country. ONLY an unprovoked attack from

that country justifies an attack on it.

So, let's hope Israel is just going for a sail.

we kept trying to find a street that would let us get to the Hudson but the NYPD blocked them all. So we found this parking lot. Eventually, we got kicked out of there, too, and ended up watching the fireworks through the chain link fence of the parking lot.
