St. Louis Evacuates Due to Heat

Wow, in southern Lebanon, they're evacuating because of the heat. In
Baghdad, everyone should be evacuating due to extreme daily violence.
Here in America, when we can't take the heat we get out of St. Louis.

According to a July
21, 2006 article
from AP.org available at
MSNBC.com

National Guard members fanned out through
darkened city streets, clearing debris and looking for residents who
needed help evacuating their sweltering homes after storms knocked out
power during a deadly heat wave.

Carrying bottled water and cookies for those needing quick pick-me-ups
Thursday, guardsmen joined firefighters, police and volunteers in
searching primarily for elderly residents living in the city's older
brick homes that one health official likened to a furnace in the
summer.

Gov. Matt Blunt called in the Guard the same day the city was declared
a disaster area after storms and power outages that affected 500,000
customers. The city was the latest to suffer from a heat wave that has
baked the nation this week, contributing to at least 22 deaths in 10
states.

Crazy stuff--although I love how the Guardsmen are giving out cookies
to provide "quick pick-me-ups." How about providing oranges or even
coffee?? Cookies jammed with chemicals and refined sugar are not the
best for you when simple survival is an issue.

Then again, I should be happy that there are Guardsmen to help the
folks of St. Louis out at all. You'd think the USG would have farmed
out their jobs to Halliburton or Blackwater or someone by now...
