The Bush administration has slipped in a major change to the Senate bill on interrogations that would allow U.S. citizens to be detained as enemy combatants. Initially the bill defined an enemy combatant as anyone who engaged in hostilities against the United States or its allies but the definition has been expanded to include anyone who has materially supported hostilities against the United States or its allies. In the headlines September 6, 2006 DN! included this story:
Prosecutors Seek 30-Year Jail Sentence For Lynne Stewart Here in this country, federal prosecutors have asked a New York judge to sentence attorney Lynne Stewart to 30 years in prison. Stewart was convicted 18 months ago of providing material support to terrorists by releasing a statement by her client, Sheik Ahmed Abdel-Rahman. She is scheduled to be sentenced next month...See how easy it is to materially support hostilities against the US? Just pass a note from a suspected terrorist to his friend and BOOM, you could get thrown in jail for, possibly, as much as 30 years. Deal with any Muslims? Are you SURE they're not friendly with terrorists? Better stay away from them, then. Wouldn't want to end up in jail for the rest of your life! ISN'T BIG BROTHER GREAT? What the HELL'S going on here?
