Somewhere along the lines, what had started as a “single red eye” became more of a mask. I’m not sure if I’m happy with this as it takes away from the basic disorientation of expecting to see a face only to see a single eye. Now, shaped like a mask, it suggests the real face is underneath. I may go back to a more round version.
