That's right, HPV, the virus that doctors say is responsible for cervical cancer can be found not in most women, but a disturbingly large amount of women. Now, you may remember HPV in the news a few weeks ago. A vaccination that can stop HPV in women (in most cases) had been created and a governor (in Texas, I think) was trying to get a law passed to make it required that all girls in the public school system get this vaccine. The catch? It's an STD.
Naturally, the religious types decide that if an STD is removed from the table of threats facing women of any age who have sex, women will be more likely to have sex. Women might think for themselves next, and we can't have that, now, can we? Forget that there are still quite a few discouraging STDs on that table still and forget that condoms can protect against them all and forget that women (well, most women) aren't retarded... Then comes along [http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=healthNews&storyid=2007-02-27T213209Z_01_N27380525_RTRUKOC_0_US-HPV-WOMEN.xml&src=rss&rpc=22|a February 27, 2007 article] from Reuters.Com that reports:
More than a quarter of U.S. girls and women ages 14 to 59 are infected with the sexually transmitted human wart virus, which causes most cases of cervical cancer, U.S. health officials estimated on Tuesday. That means human papillomavirus or HPV infection is more common than previously thought, particularly among younger age groups, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers said. Its prevalence was highest among those 20 to 24, with 44.8 percent infected, and nearly a quarter of teenagers aged 14 to 19.
So, according to this article, more than 1 in 4 women have a chance of getting cervical cancer
or they could get this vaccination. In short, if you're against this vaccination, you're against women. Being against this vaccination is like saying you want one of the next four women you see to be exposed to cervical cancer. It's like saying that and "sluts should die." TALK about misogyny!
