Irish Hunger Memorial at Battery Park City

utterli-image
Right in the middle of a bunch of modern buildings in southwest Manhattan there is a pile of dirt, a bunch of grass, plants, stones, a rock wall and the ruins of an old stone house, all of it taken from Ireland. Buried underneath part of it is an incredible light sculpture. The entire thing is a memorial to the victims of the Irish Potato Famine.

I'm not sure how effective this thing is, but it sure was neat to wander through and around it. When in Battery Park, the Irish Hunger Memorial is worth a visit.
