I think it's because it's the anti-iPhone. It's tough, simple, has no camera, no multimedia capabilities, has a 2-color (eInk) display, super-cheap (newegg.com has it for $23 shipped) and it's GSM (aka uses SIM cards). Like the OLPC XO laptop, it was designed for developing nations, but ends up being so cheap and so solid, I wouldn't mind having one myself.
I'm a living paradox. I love super-advanced tech, but super-simple, low-budget tech simultaneously enthuses me.
