Congressional Republicans want to know whether the Pakistani-born American arrested in the Times Square car bombing plot was read his Miranda rights, with Sen. John McCain saying it would be a “serious mistake” if the suspect was reminded of his right to remain silent.–Republicans warn against Miranda rights for terror suspect - Kasie Hunt - POLITICO.com (via TBogg)
Faisal Shahzad is a U.S. citizen and thereby entitled to the rights granted in the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution (the document conservatives love to scream about but seem not to really know much about, except for the Second Amendment).
I’m trying to remember the Republicans who said the same thing when members of the white, Christian Hutaree terrorist group were taken into custody. But it’s oddly not coming to me. Or Google.
They sure do make a stink about it every time the person who’s arrested is brown and/or has a furrin-sounding name, though.
Oh, well. I’m sure it’s just an honest mistake.

So let’s review. We think our citizens are innocent until proven guilty, and that they have certain rights which must be respected until such time as they have received a fair trial and been convicted. But for certain crimes, we should throw that out the window and arrest anyone we like and treat them however we please. Is that about the size of it?
Dude. This has been the way the USG has been for nearly a decade. Anyone paying attention since 2000 knows that.
We started this by robbing ourselves of our right to free and fair elections and it went down hill from there. The founding fathers said that ALL MEN are created equal--not just AMERICANS, therefore EVERYONE gets the SAME basic inalienable rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.
The fact that McCain or any Republican at all suggests the FAILBomber suspect should NOT have his Miranda Rights read to him is fascist. I hate using a term like that, but it's accurate. Picking and choosing who gets human rights and who doesn't is not exactly democratic.
